Doing research the green way ????

Most of the times when I work in the lab I am confounded with the question, if i am doing my research in the most energy efficient and environment friendly way. If I were to have my own way in a lab – I would have looked at each of the experimental protocols, instrument power consumption etc., to make sure that this objective is achieved.
But most often a research lab is a group activity – a network of diverse research interests and experimental approaches. How can I ensure that the research I do is of the green way ? How can I ease an entire research group to gradually shift towards moving research the green way?
Do you take steps to ensure that you do your work in the most energy efficient way possible ?
Are there any research labs out there that try to ensure that they have simple but effective mechanisms to perform research in the most “green way” possible ? – if so what are they ?

Hi Kamesh,
Did you notice that there’s a group here called Getting Science to Go Green? The answers to your questions might already be there. But if not, please post your questions there.

Yes, and there is also some relevant discussion on this issue at Critical Zone, Nick Wigginton’s Nature Network blog.
Most posts there are relvant to these questions, but this one is particularly pertinent.
