How have I not found this Group before!

I’m a drummer in the rock stylee. Currently “between projects” as we say, but I did take a year long career break to hack away professionally before I moved to Memphis…

Reply from Jon Edwards

Self-taught guitarist of 10 years, with flute/piccolo playing going back about 15 years. Guitaring’s my main hobby now, though having just moved I’ve not found a band yet, so haven’t properly gigged for over a year.

Musical tastes are a secret ;) I play an Ibanez JS1000 if that gives them away…

Piano and flute on my off time. Eppendorf rubbing against racks and sonicator jam during work (I know incredibly nerdy)... speaking of which, I wonder how well received a researcher percussive band would be received by the general public.

Reply from Nicolau Werneck

I play electric guitar and bass… My best band ever was called Rock Mountain Fever (the guitarist studies medicine), and we played savage rock! Main influences: Sonics, Detroit Cobras and Dirtbombs.

Link to larger picture

Leopoldo is at the guitar (at the back), and me at the front. My brother is playing the drums, he studies les Beaux-Arts. Isa is our worshiped vocalist, I think she’s into the design/publicity area… It was her first band, great finding! :)

I unfortunately had to leave the band in 2005 to start my master’s studies in Campinas… The subject: The electric guitar and its distortion! (I’m an electrical engineer) I miss it very very very much… :(

Reply from Graham Steel

Oooh – this is right up my street. Strictly speaking, I don’t qualify as I is no scientist although I am in contact with the scientific community pretty much on a daily basis.

I hung up my musical boots for 6 years to concentrate on science/research but put them on again in Aug 07.

Keyboards/vocals/recording/production are my areas of interest. A more detailed profile can be found here

Since August, I have actually been building a global super group of musicians from the scientific/research community. Everything is pretty much in place (but additions/suggestions always welcomed) apart from a lead vocalist and drummer. I’ll go for it if all else fails but I would prefer to be the architect and producer.

The aim is to get one open collaboration done over the web next year and release this at the likes of MacJam’s under a Creative Commons License.

Reply from Li Kim Lee

We also had recorder lessons at school, Brian, which may be a relic of colonial times, as it was an all-girls convent school in Malaysia. Sometimes an ancient English nun or two was present at our lessons.

And I used to play the piano (private lessons as the school did not have the capacity to teach everyone). I wish I could sing (decently)!

Reply from Brian Clegg

I deeply regret not playing anything (except the recorder, which doesn’t count as a musical instrument in most households) – when I started secondary school they asked us what instrument we’d like to learn and I said the organ (we did have one at school, and I just though the sound was so phenomenal). They wouldn’t let me because they only had one person who could teach, and he was only prepared to take on people with keyboard experience. Sigh.

However, I do still ‘play’ the cheapest instrument around, the voice. After being in a school choir that used to provide the boy’s voice parts for the Halle Orchestra, I went on to sing in one of the lesser (but still fairly respectable) Cambridge college chapel choirs, Selwyn. This also brought me an intro to barbershop, which I hate listening to, but love singing.

Mostly since, the genre I’ve stuck with is church music, by preference the Tudor & Elizabethan stuff which is gorgeous and often surprising. (Someone like John Sheppard is always doing stuff you think ‘he can’t do that!’ But he does.)

My preference is small choirs – I think if there’s more than 1 or 2 a part there’s not much point me singing.

Partly as a way of getting into village life, I started singing with the local village choir a while ago. When the choirmaster left, everyone else took a step back and I was left conducting it, which was quite frightening to begin with, but I’m getting the hang of it now.

Sorry, that’s become a bit of a life history – but like many with a science background (it’s interesting that 4 out of 6 members of our college music society committee in my day were science students), music is an important part of my life.

Rock and blues keyboards, accordion, pandemonium, tantrums. I used to be the second-best blues organist in south Essex. Once the proud owner of a keyboard rig that looked like this

I now own but one keyboard, a Korg TR61. However, I am nursing a not-so-secret ambition to acquire a Hammond XK1, so I can aim at being the second-best blues organist in North Norfolk. Nothing like aiming high, I always think.

Hi Amit,

I thought that the forum might be fun—let’s see how it goes. I play the piano—mostly classical though I do enjoy playing by ear and as far as that goes my taste tends to be rather square (okay, old-fashioned).

Here are my hands doing a Bach prelude:

Took hordes of photos playing different things and nothing looks terribly impressive. At least this photo is “interesting”. :)

Bye for now.
