There’s a new journal in town: the Journal of Visualized Experiments. Launched earlier this month by a postdoc at MGH, it’s a place for molecular biology researchers to publish videos showing scientists performing their protocols, according to this news@nature article. The idea is that videos better capture the nuances of protocols and the “tricks” needed to do them succesfully than words alone.

It’s a startup…there are only a few submissions so far so we’ll see whether this takes off. Will bench scientists want to take the time to acquire video equipment and learn how to take and edit decent quality videos?

At Nature Protocols we have been getting lots of videos showing how to do our protocols. They are a bit buried in our Supplementary Information at the moment but we are planning to launch a page highlighting some of them soon. So there are certainly some scientists out there with a steady hand and sense of Hollywood…
