Just a quick roundup of a couple of things I saw in the Globe today.
Lawrence Summers has resurfaced. I saw him last week give a speech at a meeting for investors put on by the Harvard Stem Cell Institute. He was still looking and sounding very presidential three months after he left the Harvard presidency, giving a very good pitch about how outstanding science at Harvard and in Boston is (implying that Harvard science was worth investing in).
And an article in the Globe today says he’s taken a part-time position with a New York-based hedge-fund management company. He’ll be doing other “extra-curricular” things like writing columns and being a blogger with the New Republic.In completely unrelated news today, Loling Song, a Harvard researcher, made the news earlier this week. She was at risk of losing her $750,000 NIH grant for breast cancer researcher if she didn’t get approved for her green card by November. Upset by the more than two years she had had to wait, she sued the Department of Homeland Security and the FBI.
Today, the news is that she got clearance for approval and will be able to get her grant. Kudos to her for fighting back. Other scientists frustrated by the visa/green card process in the United States I’m sure couldn’t be bothered and would rather just walk away. But then again, they probably wouldn’t have as much to lose as Song did.
