Reply from Cagan Gurer

Greetings, my name is Cagan Gurer and I am a third year postdoc at the Rockefeller University in New York City. I am wrapping up my work here and actively looking for jobs in the biotech/pharma industries. There are several jobs that I am interested in applying to in the Boston area biotech firms but it’s been difficult to get in touch with hiring managers to find more about the jobs.

For example, there’s a job offered at Vertex Pharmaceuticals that matches my career goals but the application process is online thru Vertex’s website and I can’t find a single e-mail address for contact to try to get more information about the job. And I am pretty sure addressing the cover letter to a generic HR person will get me nowhere. Is there a way to find out who is actually doing the hiring before applying?

Many thanks

Reply from Neil Sheehy

My name is Neil and I’m starting my 2nd year in a dev bio PhD at UCSF. The San Francisco bay area is such a hot spot for biotech, but UCSF doesn’t really have much in the way of teaching students about the opportunities in industry. I’ve been kicking around the idea of starting up a biotech club, hopefully with as much success as the one you guys have at Harvard!

I just was wondering if anyone had any advice on approaching industry executives to come and speak to the club, getting attendence at meetings, and the focus of the meetings – meaning, what seems to be the most interesting topics to discuss (life in industry, business 101, how to get into business, etc.) Any comments/tips/advice would be welcome!
