The rise of energy and industrial biotech (0 replies)

Seems to me energy has been a dominant theme so far at BIO: lots of sessions (many so far have been well attended) about ethanol, biofuels, energy crops, and moving beyond just ethanol and biofuels. How much can we credit Bush for this? Any thoughts on this? What have been other major themes?

Are biotech companies obliged to make their products accessible? (0 replies)

This question came up in this morning’s session entitled Biotechnology’s responsibility for human rights? Selling drugs isn’t like selling cars or shoes. Health is a social product, one that many feel is not just a product, but a basic human right. For-profit companies, however, are the ones making those drugs.

So it raises the difficult question: if you’re in the business of selling health, do you have a special responsibility to make the drugs you make accessible to people who can’t afford them? Two people on the panel said yes, including the CEO of a Cambridge biotech company. The others were silent on this question. What do you think?

A guide to Boston (1 reply)

Biogen has a website with listings of restaurants, places to shop, and things to see and do around Boston. A good resource for those of you coming from out of town (or even if you’re not).

Nature Network Boston will soon be publishing its own set of reviews of restaurants near the conference center so I’ll post another link here when they’re up.
