DESCRIPTION:Researcher Jonathan Schaeffer tells the story of his nearly two
decade personal and professional quest of programming a machine to win the
  World Checkers Championship.
\n
\nUnder his tutelage\, Chinook became the
first program in any game to win the right to play for a human world champi
 onship.
\n
\nWhile the program lost the championship match in 1992\, Chinoo
k became the undisputed champion in 1994. By 1996\, it became clear that th
e program was much stronger than any human\, so Chinook uttered its last â€
 śKing Me!”
\n
\nAbout Jonathan Schaeffer
\nJonathan Schaeffer is a Profes
sor in the Department of Computing Science at the University of Alberta. He
is the leader of the checkers project\, and he wrote most of the Chinook p
rogram. His research interests include parallel computing and artificial in
telligence. He also works on poker-playing programs (this has been commerci
 alized as Poker Academy).
\n
\nThis is a special joint Computer Science –
  AIRG Colloquium
\n
