    • Edit HTML in blogs

Is there any reason we don’t have edit HTML capability here in blogworld? The link formatting system here is a pain, and the system appears to lack a lot of basic blog functionality…

Missing: blogrolls, HTML edits, ability to claim on technorati, etc. What else?

oh yeah, ability to delete posts and enter source code as block preformatted text would be nice too :-)

In an effort to suggest that the glass might be half full… Andrew has done a nice post on formatting in the Nature Network.

(I did a slightly more surreal version earlier.)

It does seem odd that we can write over posts, but not delete them… the latter is arguably more “undesirable” (in terms of preserving the content) than the former. We do have the power to delete comments from our own blogs (only found this out quite recently…).

Another odd thing that you might not have noticed yet: If you start a post on Monday and then save it rather than submitting it, and then post it on Wednesday, it will be dated as Monday and will not be on the top of the list of recent posts unless nobody posted in the meantime. There are obviously workarounds, but the first time it happened I was a bit gobsmacked.

Thanks for the link on textism – noted that the glass is less full than I thought. However, you can’t do good HTML linking using the system as the space between the URL and the “rel” feature doesn’t render – this makes microformats, RDFa, and other stuff impossible :-(

Is there a reason to disable direct HTML editing? It’s muuuuuch easier for a lot of things than Yet Another Markup System. YAMS are good for food, not so much for the web.

          Hi John and everyone,
Yes, we realize our blogging platform isn’t ideal and is missing some basic stuff. We’ll be replacing it with a new and better system in 2008 (not sure yet of exact timeframe, I hear the blog team is working out specific deadlines now), which will have a lot more of the features you’d expect from a blog, so please hang in there with us. This will get a whole lot better soon!
