To follow up from my last post on the realism or otherwise of scientists on screen in Lab Rats, here’s a lament from novelist Matt Thorne in this week’s Telegraph on Why does Hollywood get the writer so wrong?

Mixed miscellanies
I think this is going to be a fairly varied collection of posts on stuff to do with art, science, culture, geekery and science communication. But we'll see, eh?

Think scientists are misrepresented on screen? Try being a writer.

This quote sums up the article:
The best films about novelists… are those that allow their protagonists, depressed, blocked or otherwise, to get away from the typewriter. They are films in which writers do something other than sit behind their desks, whether it’s travelling through California’s wine country or being terrorised by a psychotic John Goodman.
Would scientists say the same (they are best depicted away from their lab, their work) about their depiction on screen? Should they?

Let’s spread the professional stereotypes around evenly…only fair!
Not sure about scientists but how about Pi for a representation of a mathematician away from academia?
