Drop-down on the National Express website, which I saw while booking tickets to get to the blogging conference.

Why not carbon offset for trains, Richard? Some trains in the UK are so poor that, with the loads they carry, a car with four people in it is more carbon effecient that doing the same journey by train.

If you book for something in the US, you also get a suffix, which is for entries such as “the third” “Jr” and so on.

If you’d selected [other] do you get a free-text entry box? That’d be fun.

e.g. Most Mighty Uberlord Richard Grant

If not, would your name appear as [Other] Richard Grant?

I wonder why the need to be so specific, I’d expect this sort of thing from a public sector company but even my local council website more moderate ;)

You should see the database that I use at work, it has a lovely dropdown for Title – everything from Rear Admiral to His Excellency.

This reminds me of a faux news item on The Two Ronnies which went something like:

the Annual General Meeting of the organization known as the Lords of the Universe has had to be postponed because their leader, the Grand Master and Absolute Ruler of All Living Things, couldn’t come, because his wife wouldn’t let him.
