• Science in the Bel Paese

Italy has a serious scientific research excellence problem at home. Why there are so few foreign scientists in Italian Labs? Is the Italian academic job ladder closed to foreigners? Something new is happening, just may be, and I feel an urge to report it.

Back on track with my mission to provide info on open funding calls in the Bel Paese. The Italian Association for Cancer Research (AIRC) is now calling for research proposals of three types:

      1. Investigator Grants
      2. Start-Up Grants
      3. My first Grants

The full call for proposals document is available (in English) here .
I am going to give only a very short, espresso-like summary, of this open call.

      Investigator Grants
These are dedicated to established groups and relatively senior principal investigators (PIs). Deadline for online submission of proposals: January 14, 2008. Funding expected to be awarded for a period of 3 years. Budget not specified at this stage.

      Start-Up Grants
These are intended to foster the birth and growth of new research units. Applying PIs would be best below 35 years of age (exceptions for career interruptions do apply). Funding will be available for up to 5 years and will cover the salary of the PI, the salary of up to two fellows (post-docs or technicians), research costs, equipment, and both indirect and overhead costs. Maximum budget is 150,000 euros per annum. Pre-submission (max 2 pages, 1000 words) deadline is January 14, 2008

      My First Grant
These are investigator-driven fellowships and aim at supporting the salary of the candidate. It is expected that the candidate will be conducing his-her work in a laboratory that is already fully functional. Budget will be 50,000 euros per annum. Submission deadline: January 14, 2008

Other fellowships are anticipated to be made available in June 2008.

This Christmas/New Year holiday may not exactly be a holiday for some!
      Ciao, Massimo
