Dear Mom,
On thursday/friday last week, I created an avatar in Second Life called ‘Bronwen Pizzicato’ and spent a disproportionately long time trying to get her face (and body) to look more-or-less like mine…
…but, according to one of her new friends, it is obvious from the way that she dresses that she is a ‘newbie’! I think it might be the shoes :) (not shown).
Everyone she met was very friendly and eager to share their knowledge and experience, and all-in-all she has had a very eventful first few days.
She was lucky enough to watch Horace Moody show Lali Ewry how to set up a powerpoint presentation at Chem/Bio Foo. Both of them have blogged about it: here and there respectively.
The most beautiful place that she has been to so far has been Svarga. Here are some photos to whet your appetite!
Then today, she went to an on-line poster session on Communicating Science with Video, which was very interesting, though the experience was spoilt slightly by the fact that my work computer is rather slower than the one I use at home.
There is a Second Life group in Nature Network where we can all chat about it and of course there is Joanna’s Blog.
That’s all for now. My eyes are a bit squiffy after spending so much time on-line.
Yours etc,
Bronwen
I’m glad you could make to the session yesterday!
Sorry that your experience was not as good. If the computer can’t quite handle Second Life the exprience can be very poor.
Luckily, I am allowed to work from home one day a week, so in future will try to organise that it coincides with meetings on Second Life that I will find interesting.
Was quite taken with the idea of making my own screencasts – I wonder if I can come up with something that would be useful to Bioscreencast… :) …
An update:
I have learnt a trick that will significantly improve my Second Life experience. If you click on an object (like a powerpoint presentation) while holding down the ‘alt’ key, it centres that object and you can zoom into it using your mouse – I use the scroll-wheel. You can interact with the object (using the mouse) while staying in this state. To exit this, either press escape or start moving.
And:
A kind lady gave me a free pair of trainers which I have altered slightly to suit my tastes!
Let me know if you find out what the trick is without using the mousewheel – I don’t have one on my laptop.
Congrats on your clothing improvement – that is a big part of the fun for many people :)

Our motto at Bioscreencast is simple, if you can screencast anything related to the lifesciences and it meets certain video quality standards (easily met), you are good to go.
Looking forward to a screencast.
Reminds me .. I need to work on my avatar. More goth :)
