I caught part of a piece on Today this morning about how important it was to give science teachers on-the-job training. I think this is true – and what’s more I believe I’ve the ideal vehicle. They should all be issued with the web address of the excellent Popular Science website (ahem) and an Amazon voucher and told to go and buy some popular science books.
Seriously, site-plugging apart, I do believe popular science books are a great way for science teachers both to expand their own knowledge but also to pick up stuff to use produce that all-important ‘sense of wonder’, so vital in engaging the students. IPopular science books should be more consciously recognized and encouraged as recommended reading and part of the learning process by the powers-that-be.
(Lot of hyphens in this post. Dunno why.)
I’m with you – inspiration is crucial. I’m also surprised at how much I, someone who is around science all the time, am still affected by popular science books, good documentaries, and flashy museum exhibits. That stuff gets you every time, regardless of your level of expertise, and it’s nice to be reminded sometimes of why you got into this business in the first place.
Absolutely, Jeff. I think with teachers it’s good both for personal inspiration and to mine things you can then use with the students to get them excited.
